Off and Racing

This week is Education Week and will be celebrated at Wahgunyah Primary School on Wednesday 9th May with a Parents and Grandparents Day where students and their families will participate in Maths activities and games together from 12.00 to 1.30pm. Education Week is a celebration of the innovation and achievements of Victorian Government Schools and to increase awareness of what vibrant places of learning our students attend. Families are welcome to join their children for a BYO picnic lunch and spend time celebrating their children’s success at school.

Speaking of success, Wahgunyah had four students try out for Zone football recently, with two being selected for the team. Congratulations to Brett and Kodee. Kodee however, unfortunately broke his arm in an accident outside of school last week and will no longer be able to participate. Good luck to Brett with the next level.

In recent years, Wahgunyah Primary has been involved in the hugely popular RACV Energy Breakthrough, being outright Australian winners in 1999. This year, students in years 4, 5 and 6 will be participating in the event that focuses on energy and innovation in science, technology and environmental education using non motorised transport. The project involves students in exciting hands on learning experiences and challenges in an integrated curriculum approach.

Beginning last week and running for the rest of the year, students will design, build and race a pushcart. This encompasses cross curriculum activities including Language – letter writing to sponsors, writing reports; Mathematics – measuring, calculation; Science – problem solving, physics, robotics; Health and PE – nutrition, physical activity; Technology – recording data, website construction; Music – composing a team song; Art – designing a team logo and uniform; French – French translations for tools and components. The project involves girls and boys and requires large support from families and the community in the form of sponsorship, help with training (running, driving and pushing the carts) and assistance with tasks that can’t be done at school such as welding.

At the Australia wide (and New Zealand) event, which takes place in Maryborough VIC, from 22nd to 24th of November, two teams from Wahgunyah Primary will compete with their pushcarts for points in three categories including Presentation (40%), Design and Construction (40%) and Racing which includes obstacle, relay and endurance races (20%). This is a wonderful real life experience and reports will keep the community updated on the progress of the students in their endeavours to rise up to this inspiring challenge.
