During Term 2 at Wahgunyah Primary School, each year level is learning about countries of Asia as part of the Studies of Asia Curriculum Initiative. In the Prep, 1, 2 C classroom the focus is on China where children have been reading Chinese fables and learning about pandas through stories, discussions and mask making. The students have also been writing what they now know about China with many children being fascinated by the number of people who have black hair compared to Australia.
In the Prep, 1, 2 A classroom, Vietnam is the country of interest where students were treated with a guest speaker, Dr Love, who recently visited this country and was able to share lots of interesting facts and information with the children by showing them a slide show. The students have learnt about the differences between Australia and Vietnam and have been making sanpams, a type of boat that some people live in.
In year 3, students have immersed themselves in the Thai culture with many artefacts, pictures, books and items relating to Thailand being on display in the classroom. Students are creating individual powerpoint presentations on Thai sports and customs and have enjoyed a visit from Mr Hall who visited his son in Thailand, and so was able to provide the class with many stories and details about the Thai culture.
Years 4, 5 and 6 are experiencing many Asian countries through a series of projects that enable students to “visit” a country using their “passports”. Whilst visiting a particular country, students are completing a variety of tasks that explore different aspects of each country’s culture and way of life.
All the students at Wahgunyah will celebrate their Studies of Asia with an “Asia Day” during the second last week of term. On this day students will dress up and participate in a variety of Asia related activities, including cooking, music and dancing, sport, literacy and art to consolidate their learning from throughout the term.
With the arrival of June, the Wahgunyah Neighbourhood Watch Awards for May were presented on Friday to some very hard working students at the school. The award winners this month were Jake, Caleb , Sam Michie, Emma and Josh.
The Wangaratta Zone Cross Country event will be held on Wednesday 6th June in Wangaratta. Last week at Wahgunyah eight students ran the 3 and 2 km course tryouts, with Lachlan and Jake from year 4, Kieran, Connor and Brett from year 6 all making it through. Good luck to these competitors!
