About

The first school at Wahgunyah was established as Wahgunyah National School in 1857. The labour was paid for by John Foord, the founder of Wahgunyah. The school first received the number 644 in 1863. The present main building was established in 1878 on two acres of land that John Foord sold to the Education Department for eighty pounds per acre. The school was proud to celebrate 125 years of public education in 2003.

The school is set in spacious grounds, one street back from the main thoroughfare. As well as the original building there are three additional classrooms, a multi-purpose room and an amenities block connected to the main building by a covered walkway.

The school currently has over 80 students, with enrolment steadily increasing over recent years with the growth of Wahgunyah.

Wahgunyah Primary School has always been a small school and as such allows children to be educated in a supportive, friendly atmosphere. Visitors to the school often remark on the friendly, caring atmosphere and the pleasant tone. Small class numbers mean that children have access to increased individual attention and are able to work at an individual level. Interaction with children of all ages helps students to learn tolerance and develop strong interpersonal skills.

Children are educated in multi-grade settings, with strong use of cross age tutoring and whole school activities. This is beneficial both from a learning point of view and in helping to develop a strong community spirit.
